Naples, Pizzeria Fresco
Via Partenope, 8
He has an impetuous and irreverent temperament. When his fan Emanuele Filiberto praised his pizza, he said him: «You are the prince, I am the king». In fact he is the king of pizza. He worked at «Salvatore alla Riviera» at the times of the mythical twin car-park attendants, the Vezza brothers, and at Ciro a Mergellina restaurant for forty years.
He also had experience at the Voga in Coroglio, then at the Sacrestia, in Stromboli and London where he enlarged the Fish & Chip restaurant, opened by his brother, with a pizzeria. Alfredo is indefatigable and smiling. He doesn’t reveal his age but confesses that he is like good wine, he gets better with the years.
His loyal clients follow him everywhere. Now Mr. Forgione works at the Pizzeria Fresco in Partenope street. He turned bank offices into a trattoria-pizzeria. The cuisine is good and the pizzas are excellent. Alfredo is less hard now and even affirms that the young Roberto Esposito, who helps him, will be successful.
This pizzeria is nice, also if they should lighten the furnishings, and Gennaro Varriale manages it well.
The chef Peppe Palumbo, who comes from Pozzuoli, prepares good starters like croutons and big salads. I recommend a very good mixed fried seafood in the Italian style and high quality meat (steaks, fillets, sliced steaks and fried meat balls in tomato sauce). Regarding the seafood there is a good tuna-fish fillet with vegetables and the catch of the day. The first courses are classic like the “ziti” pasta with tomato “ragů” sauce, “tubetti” with mussels and pecorino cheese and some innovative dishes like “schiaffoni” pasta with pumpkin, mascarpone, walnuts and pecorino cheese. Of course, don’t miss Alfredo’s pizzas. The pizza Margherita is extraordinary but also the ones with sausage and broccoli, aubergine gratin and escarole and the stuffed calzone (baked or fried) are excellent. The dough is very good. Umberto Bossi tasted this pizza and said: «It is worth being Neapolitans just for enjoying this pizza».
You will roughly spend 25-30 Euros.
There is a small wine-list.
