Augusto’s limoncello Diletta De Sio Do you want to enjoy a drink on the Amalfi Coast? Go to the Shaker. The old factory located in Vietri sul Mare has been restored and so the firm of the Strianese group is an hymn to the scents and the fruit of this land. It exports the products to Spain, Belgium, France, Germany and Bulgaria. The limoncello is the most important product, it is realized with the IGP lemons produced by O’ Cammariello farm whose owner is the president of the Salerno Chamber of Commerce Augusto Strianese. You can also find liqueurs made with fennel, laurel, mandarin and creams and baba. They are exported to the Balkans and the Mediterranean. Until a short time ago this handcrafted workshop was located in the centre of Vietri sul Mare and an intense scent of orange blossoms spread even on the road. This firm was born in 1996 and now it is located in a building which traces back to the beginning of the twentieth century and it includes innovative technologies. The lemons used to produce the limoncello are the IGP Amalfi Coast ones, the lemons which the typical “sfusato” from Amalfi is prepared and they come from the ‘O Cammariello farm. This farm follows all the rules about quality in the production of mandarin and fennel liqueurs and all the aromatic herbs used to be turned into liqueurs and creams. Shaker has clients from Spain, Belgium, France, Germany, Bulgaria, Guatemala and Columbia but it also aims at becoming a leader in the Balkans and in the Mediterranean markets. It is present in the airports of Naples, Milan Malpensa and Linate and it proposes three lines: one for catering, one for supermarkets and one for tourists. For tourists fine and special bottles have been realized and they have exclusive names like Anfora, Scerì, Ipnotic, Vesuvio, Goccia and Opera. Every year they produce about one hundred thousand litres of liqueurs and creams. They would like to set the record of 250 thousand litres in 2006. In spite of the fact that the increasing production has determined a modernization of the processing structures, the methods and the recipes to produce the liqueurs have remained the ones of the handcrafted tradition from Amalfi. The limoncello is still prepared with water, thin peels of the “sfusato” lemon from Amalfi, sugar and alcohol. In the silos the product is preserved very well. The filtering and bottling techniques have been improved. The factory is open to guided visits and tasting sessions. They have many plans for the future. The next Vinitaly edition will be an important occasion to present three wines which have been selected by the Villa Divina farmhouse of the Strianese group and will be included in the Shaker’s proposal. They are two white wines (a Fiano from Avellino and a Falanghina from Benevento) and a red one (Aglianico from Benevento). There are also the “sulla” honey and the honey vinegar.
